Creative Organizations at VT Part 1: Fashion, Comedy, and A Capella

Over a thousand organizations are listed on Virginia Tech’s GobblerConnect website, a place where students can find information about all of the clubs on campus to fulfill any of their interests. Whether you want to watch cartoons every Saturday morning or drink chocolate milk every Monday night, there’s a club for you.

Because of this variety, you may not know where to start. If you’re interested in joining the burgeoning creative community and don’t know what’s out there, don’t despair. Here are a few of the ways you can get involved based on your interests.

If you like fashion

Fashion Merchandising and Design Society (FMDS)

FMDS is an organization primarily for students who are interested in working in the fashion industry. The group is open to all majors, however, and anyone with a penchant for fashion can join. Members run a blog at vtvogue.com and participate in service projects throughout the year. The group also produces fashion shows, like last spring’s Washed Ashore, and hosts pop-up shops and workshops.

ThriftEd Mag

ThriftEd Mag is an online fashion magazine, launched in March 2017, that spotlights thrifted clothing and accessories. ThriftEd emphasizes the DIY nature of its editorials, which are created by student writers, designers, photographers, artists, models, and stylists. The magazine is rapidly growing and maintains a strong social media presence.

If you like to laugh

Deep Fried Improv

Deep Fried Improv, formerly called Lolopolis, is an improv comedy group on campus. The group stages around two themed shows a semester, usually free or for little cost, and holds auditions every fall. Past shows include a holiday spectacular and an apocalyptic themed performance.

Improv at Virginia Tech

Improv at Virginia Tech hosts Friday and Saturday shows a few times a semester and regularly has open practices in which nonmembers are encouraged to attend and participate. The group also promotes active audience participation during its shows, holds auditions every fall, and participates in service projects together, such as The Big Event.

If you like to sing

A capella groups have a large presence on campus, and you’re sure to find one that suits your needs.

All-male

Juxtaposition is an all-male a capella group and is the oldest a capella group at Virginia Tech, established in 1994.

Naturally Sharp (Natty Sharp) is another all-male a capella group, established in 2002 and known for its signature maroon and orange outfits.

All-female

Soulstice, founded in 1998, is the oldest all-female a capella group at Tech.

Sensations is another all-female a capella group that was formed in fall 2003.

Co-ed

Mixed Emotions is the oldest co-ed a capella group at Tech.

TechNotes is a fairly new a capella group that was founded in 2010. Like Mixed Emotions, it is co-ed and holds a concert each semester.
