Decorating Your Dorm Room or Apartment for the Holidays
With the end of the semester hitting you like a ton of bricks, you may want a distraction from all of your stress. Luckily, with the holidays coming up and only a few more weeks left of school, now is the perfect time to start decorating your dorm room or apartment to make it more festive. Since college students are notoriously broke, here are a few suggestions for decorating for the holidays on a budget.
Create your own
With only paper and scissors, you can create your own paper snowflakes to put on your door, on the wall, or on your refrigerator. You can also make your own wreath out of whatever materials you can find — construction paper, ribbons, etc. — and hang it on your door.
Use wrapping paper
Decorating your room or apartment with wrapping paper, either new or leftover from last year, is a cheap and simple way to get in the holiday spirit. You can use scraps of wrapping paper to outline your pictures or posters on the wall, or even wrap various items in your room if you want to go all out.
Decorate candle holders
You may not be allowed to light real candles, but you can always use LED candles (or even real, unlit candles). All you need is a container or stand, which you can fill and decorate with any materials you want. Some options include painting snowflakes on the holder, bedazzling it (if you’re into that kind of thing), tying a classic red ribbon around it, filling it with items from nature like acorns, pinecones, and leaves, and whatever else you can think of.
Hang Christmas lights
If you wanna get lit for Christmas, get out some strings of lights. What kind of lights, how many, and where you can hang them may be dependent upon where you live, but adorning your room in sparkly bright lights can make it feel it cozy and magical. You can choose either white or multi-colored lights depending on your tastes. An alternative to hanging them on the wall is filling glass jars with them and placing them around the room.
Get a Christmas tree
Of course, if you’re living in a cramped dorm room, there’s no way you could fit an 8 foot tall tree (and why would you want to?). But you can still get a mini one, real or fake, and wrap lights around it or even hang ornaments if you’re so inclined — maybe even spring for one that lights up!
If you’re in the mood to celebrate the holiday season through the art of decorating, I hope you found these tips helpful. There are so many great ways to decorate; you just have to get creative.
