We're Looking For...

Submitting to the magazine is a great way to get your creative work out into the world, and "published" makes a great line on your resume! Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Note: we reserve the right to change the category of your submission if we feel it is in the best interest of the piece or that it was incorrectly submitted.

You may submit up to two (2) pieces per category.

 

Poetry & Prose

We accept:

  • poetry, short fiction, creative non-fiction, humor columns, and more

Format:

  • we understand that poetry often includes stylistic spacing. we reserve the right to alter this to make it better fit the publication if selected. 

  • Prose submissions are limited to 5 pages, and poems should be kept to 2 pages (if double spaced, 12pt)

  • Most file formats will work

    • do not send .pages​

  • If you need to send a piece via email

    • do not send it as a sharepoint link

    • do not send it as a google drive link

    • an attachment is the appropriate method.

Art & Photography

We accept:

  • paintings, illustrations, architectural drawings, sketches, sculpture, and more

Format:

  • Make sure that photographs of your piece are appropriately cropped

  • No collections -- individual works only! 1 piece per submission.

  • All submissions must have a resolution of at least 300dpi and dimensions of at least 4x6 inches

  • pdfs are preferred, but we also accept .tif, .jpeg, .esp, .bmp, .psd, and .ai files

  • If submitting art, please inform us of the medium with your submission.

  • See above comment about file format.

How to Submit...

Please use our submissions uploader, if this is not working then email submissions to  silhouettemag.vt@gmail.com.

 

Some Technical Stuff

All files must be named with the title of the work. For example, a photo titled "Rain" should be labeled "Rain."

We will not accept files labeled "untitled" or something similar to "DSC_0000."

 

Do not put your name on your submission (either in the document or in the file name). If you submit by email, include your contact information in the body of the email and make sure your file size does not exceed 2MB.

If you are submitting multiple pieces you should submit one piece at a time (i.e. one submission per piece).

Please indicate upon time of submission what category your submission falls into (poetry, prose, photography, or art).

If you do not go to Virginia Tech...

 

Please share your local address upon submission as proof of eligibility. If your piece is selected, we will reach back out to ask for basic biographical information to be included in the magazine.

*Spring 2025 is the first semester wherein individuals outside of VT have been able to submit. We encourage non-VT submissions and are beyond excited to offer our publication to a broader audience, as we believe in making art more accessible and are confident in our decision to expand our pool to more deserving creatives.

*This License Agreement is made by and between you ("freelance creator") and the Educational Media Company at Virginia Tech, Inc. ("EMCVT, Inc.") This License Agreement applies to all original content submitted for publication in Silhouette Literary and Arts Magazine, the Woove or any similar EMCVT, Inc. publication for which content is solicited from freelance creators other than EMCVT, Inc. staff members. Content includes words, photographs, graphics, illustrations, cartoons, designs, advertisements, videos and any other creative work that may be subject to copyright. The freelance creator agrees that as a condition of submitting content to an EMCVT, Inc. publication, the freelance creator grants EMCVT, Inc. the limited rights to publish that content in print, indefinitely on a website associated with that print publication and indefinitely in promotional materials for the publication. For example, content submitted to be published in Silhouette may be reprinted on the Silhouette website and in advertisements promoting Silhouette. The freelance creator retains all rights to their original content other than those explicitly assigned to EMCVT, Inc. in this agreement. Those rights retained by the freelance creator include, but are not limited to, the rights to sell, assign or otherwise license the content for use in media other than that of EMCVT, Inc.
